There Will Be No Leave Today - Tarkovsky's Early Short Film

There Will Be No Leave Today 1959

by

Andrei Tarkovsky & Aleksandr Gordon

It was supposed to be a holiday. Soldiers, officials and common people were supposed to have fun- go to market, beaches or laze around.

A cache of missiles are recovered at a construction site. This causes huge panic. The off-day is cancelled and officials are soldiers are deployed to diffuse the situation. In the meantime, the town is emptied and inhabitants are asked to leave.

This is a 46 minutes long propaganda film which used to be broadcast on Soviet TV. Tarkovsky's cynicism is unmistakably present and can be discerned through the responses of characters. Wonder if the authorities saw through it, or just played along.
