Challengers - Tennis Fiction does not fulfil even if it works

CHALLENGERS (2024)

by

Luca Guadagnino

Two amateur tennis players, bosom buddies on and off court, fall for the same hotshot Junior Tennis Champ, who is being touted as the next big thing. She falls for one, but flirts with both, and ultimately proves to be a homewrecker.

Cut to later, the hotshot Tashi gets injured and loses her career. Tashi gets married to and becomes the coach of Art Donaldson, who is now estranged with Patrick Zweig, who had earlier dated Tashi. The love triangle is complete. Art is able to win six Grand Slams, but US Open eludes him. Patrick, son of rich parents, has fallen by the wayside, stuck in Challengers, is inconsistent as hell, and hence his career has not taken off.

In the present, Art is no longer inspired enough to play tennis, and wants to retire. Tashi wants him to win the USO and keep playing. Patrick is looking to play one last season and offers Tashi to coach him to a season of glory.

This is that kind of a Challenger romcom, but boasts of good-looking people- Zendaya plays Tashi, Josh O' Connor plays Patrick and Mike Faist is Art. Its not a great tennis film as such, but a not a bad film to watch. Tennis action is not bad, although seems quite affected. Camera work tries to capture court-side action in innovative manner.
