John Wayne had won his only Best Actor's Oscar for his role of Rooster Cogbern in True Grit (1969). Jeff Bridges mustered a nomination himself, but could not convert it. But the performance is just as fine, and heart-warming. The Dude can just raise his level when the situation so demands.
A 14 year-old girl, whose Daddy has been shot by an outlaw, hires a US Marshal, Cogburn, to bring the perp to justice. She accompanies him on the manhunt. The duo are joined by a Texas Ranger, played by Matt Damon. After a long pursuit, the film reaches its conclusion. The film is helped by excellent performances and beautiful cinematography. The film has undercurrent of frontier humour. The little girl comes across as a teen wise-ass, who has certainly earned her spurs. Hailee Steinfeld was also nominated for Best Actress. The film was nominated for Best Picture as well as Best Director, ten nominations in all, but failed to convert even one of them. The 2010 film was more faithful to the novel by Charles Portis, rather than being a remake of True Grit (1969).
