PALTAN - On The Battle of Nathu La 1967

PALTAN 2018
by
JP Dutta

The Battles of Nathu La and Cho La in 1967 saw India take the sting out of Chinese arrogance. We successfully defended our passes and inflicted heavy casualties upon the PLA. As per reports, PLA lost 400 odd soldiers while Indian Army lost about 120 of its braves.
JP Dutta has presented as authentic a version as was possible. War logs and diaries have guided the screenplay. Characters have been properly drawn , and the reasons behind the friction have been delved into. The film could have been better edited and music might have been more catchy.
It was 2nd Granadiers' tenacity as well as Sagat Singh's bold decision to use artillery without clearance from the top that titled balance in India's favour. Jackie Shroff as Lt.Gen. Sagat Singh and Arjun Rampal as Col. Rai Singh Yadav have done a remarkable job. Sonu Sood as Maj.Bishen Singh has also done well. Harshvardhan Rane as Maj. Harbhajan Singh and Gurmeet Chowdhary as Capt PS Dagar have overdone their bit.
Despite its length, dull music and a  bit of melodrama, Paltan is a fitting tribute to our braves. It is a necessary watch for anyone who wants to understand how tense it remains at the border, and how vile, vicious and parasitical the Chinese are.
