Pompeii -The Last Day 2003
BBC documentary
I had read about this disaster in my school textbooks but cud never have imagined what happened down
there at Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79
AD when Mount Vesuvius breathed ash and pumice.
This fabulous BBC documentary takes us through various
stages of the volcanic eruption Including the deadliest last phase called
pyroclastic surge in which the fluidised mass of gases and rock fragments just
swept through the nearby area causing immense damage.
The documentary also recounts the lives of certain
inhabitants as gathered from their skeletal remains and archaeological
evidences.
Pliny the Elder as well as his nephew Gaius (Pliny the Younger
) rushed to the site near the eruption in a rescue mission to save a friend.Pliny
the elder died during the rescue, but the Younger survived and wrote an account
of the event which was considered too bizarre to be true.Later volcaological
studies during the 20th cent confirmed his observations.
