The Social Network- The Story of Facebook

THE SOCIAL NETWORK 2010

Some Harvard guys went onto create Facebook with a lot of coding, use of imagination, hardly any funding, some hustle and allegations of credit-hogging. When I first heard that a movie was being made on this topic, my first reaction was that it is an unfilmable and uninteresting material. Of course, I'd had not read Ben Mezrich's book, The Accidental Millionaires, till then and had not come to appreciate Aaron Sorkin's craft.

Jesse Eisenberg's portrayal of Mark Zukerberg as an obsessive, cold, calculative nerd is just fabulous. Andrew Garfield has played Eduardo Saverin with due restraint, while Armie Hammer has become Winklevoss brothers with distinction. Justin Timberlake just went bonkers with his Sean Parker act.

The film was nominated for Best Picture, Director and Actor by the Academy. Sorkin won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Fifteen years I first saw the film, I saw it again this week, and I was surprised that it still carried enough urgency and excitement that led me to finish the film in a single evening. I guess Mezrich and Sorkin had managed to capture a tech entrepreneur's charisma, focus, obsession with the idea and its ownership as well coming-into-riches in a perfect manner. That has led to The Social Network's abiding charm.
