Chameli- A much underrated film

CHAMELI 2004

"Chameli, gana sunao!"

With that one dialogue and one song, Bhage re mann, Kareena Kapoor, broke all stereotypes and proved her worth as an actor. She was never again labelled as a doll. She was an actress who could handle her own in any role. She plays a street prostitute with a good heart facing some trouble from her handler and a client. Rahul Bose, playing an investment banker, is forced to spend a night at her pick-up point because his car develops some snag owing to heavy rain. They talk, are drawn into each other's lives. Kareena is flirtatious and confident; Bose plays coy and withdrawn.

Some drama is introduced towards the climax. Pankaj Jha and Yashpal Sharma have impressive cameos. The film is not about a 'whore's rescuing', rather about a sad man's opening up. Through this emotional overload, he comes to terms with this personal tragedy and moves on in life. Chameli could have been a tad better, but as it stands, is a damn good product. As a night's tale, it is perhaps better than Is Raat ki Subah Nahin. I would rate Chameli as Sudhir's finest after Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi....
