The Hudsucker Proxy- Coens' Weakest?

THE HUDSUCKER PROXY 1994

by

Joel Coen

After the President of Hudsucker Industries jumps to his death from the 44th floor, Norville Barnes (played by Tim Robbins), an unknown face at the bottom floor, is selected to head the Company. He is expected to run the company to the ground so that current Board members could purchase the shares at throwaway prices and retain control. Mr. Mussburger, played by Paul Newmann, plays these crooked games but fails to read the last Blue Letter. Anyway, Barnes, though imbecile, turns out to be a good natured one. A Pulitzer-winning journalist gets busy in exposing these goings-on but feels drawn towards Barnes' essential goodness instead. The story basically sucks, and despite the magical production work, designs, cinematography and characters, it turns out to be a pastiche, a poor reference to some old films it purports to mock. The film lacks soul, and sucks despite its style. Tim Robbins is all over the place without getting involved, Jannifer Jason Leigh is nowhere. One man who could have saved this ship, Paul Newmann, is wasted as a scheming director. Not a bad watch, I repeat, but Coens' weakest.
