BLOOD SIMPLE 1984
by
Joel Coen
Blood Simple was Joel Coen's directorial debut. He wrote the story in collaboration with his brother Ethan. Frances McDormand made her acting debut in this film as well, as did Carter Burwell, the music composer and Barry Sonnenfeld, the cinematographer. The film was a low budget dream start for the Coens and received a lot of critical attention.
This is the story of a woman, Frances, who runs with a bartender, her husband's employee. The jealous husband finds out about their liaison, hires a PI and asks him to kill the duo. There is a lot of double-crossing, misunderstanding, goof-ups and bloodletting in the film. Violence is beautifully, although vehemently shot. There is a touch of humour in the proceedings, but only the audience, not the cast, are in on jokes. That sets the tone for this film and perhaps for Coens' later work. The film's haunting score and visual style gave it a distinct look and a cult following. There is no hint of apology in any of Blood Simple's characters.
There is a reason why BLOOD SIMPLE is a cult film. All its parts come together to form a marvellous story.
