MAIN AZAAD HOON 1989

Javed Akhtar has no moral scruples. He can play around with words; there is no disputing that. But that there is not a single original bone in his brain is also true. He shamelessly fused the scripts of Network and Meet John Doe and passed the fusion as his own. That is the story of his famed career. Anyway, here he creates a character named Azaad, a freelancing vigilante-cum-social worker who uses the power of press after getting initially used by them to unleash blows upon established politicians and administration.
Manohar Singh is the owner of a newspaper that is losing its circulation and thereby money. He aims to sensationalize news. One of his journalists, Shabana Azmi, weaponizes news by writing incendiary letters under an imaginary signature. People warm up to this non-existent person named Azaad. She is forced to find some gullible person who can satisfy public curiosity. Her search ends in Amitabh Bachchan who is a tramp. As can be expected, Big B grows into the role and ends up becoming Azaad. The film is not bad as long as it lasts. But it could have been much better. Manohar Singh, Ajit Vachchani and Anupam Kher could have been used in better manner. That is a fucking tragedy because the idea had a lot of potential. Kaifi Azmi's song Kitne Baju Kitne Sar, Ginle Dushman Dhyan se proved to be quite a draw.
