Doctor Sleep 2019
by
Mike Flanagan
Stanley Kubrick's The Shining had strayed from Stephen King's original material in some respects leading to creative differences between the two legends. King had blessed a production of a Shining film of his own in 1997. Mike Flanagan has tried to bridge the gap between the versions through his film adaptation of Stephen King's 2013 novel which serves as a sequel to The Shining.
First things first, Doctor Sleep does not match The Shining in the latter's rawness and terror. It does not even attempt it. Hotel Overlook is now a caricatured piece of ruin; Jack Torrence reappears via side profile to strike a conversation with his son.
As for the story, Jack's son who has survived his father's madness grows up into a troubled soul. Ewan McGregor has done a good job of playing a repentant alcoholic who struggles to keep his 'shine' buried. He has developed a method over the years after Dick Hallorann had initially taught him to trap ghostly interlopers in psychic lockboxes. Danny Torrence ends up helping a little girl take on True Knot, an old psychic vampire cult, led by Rose the Hat.
Doctor Sleep is traditional horror film rather a supernatural horror. How can a fan of Dr King or Kubrick's The Shining afford to miss this one?
