Lions for Lambs- A Talk Shop on Duty & War

 LIONS for LAMBS 2007

by

Robert Redford

A senator, full of polished words and fake smiles, calls a liberal TV journalist to his office and sells her a new strategy to win the war on terror in Afghanistan. The senator, played by Tom Cruise, is a Presidential hopeful, and propounds the idea that the war on terror is to be won no matter what. The liberal journalist, played by Meryl Streep, is guilt-ridden from buying the Iraq War from politicians and peddling it to common Americans. She is now too conflicted to jump at the opportunity to do an exclusive.

Two young soldiers, one Latino (Mike Pena) and one Black, enlist to make world a better place, because hey, doing is better than cribbing. While being airdropped in Afghanistan, they are struck and fall into no man's land. They are surrounded by hostiles; help would take long in coming. Basically, their fate is sealed.

Robert Redford plays a college professor who has invited his favourite student played by Andrew Garfield for a verbose chat. The professor asks the youngster why he has stopped caring or trying, to which the latter has same old cynical answers. The professor tries to pontificate, but his silver-talk is not really bought by the smart cookie that the student is.

This is a kind of film that relies more upon words and gestures than action. If you are talking about war, such optimistic hi-falutin talk does not sell anymore. People have seen a lot of idealism and patriotic ideas flow down the drain. Everyone knows whose interests are served by war. We would fight if it would suit or serve us. But please spare us the opium of duty.
