Kesari Chapter 2- Good, but historical fiction!

 KESARI CHAPTER 2 (2025)

It must be clarified at the very outset that KS-2 is a work of historical fiction which messes up quite badly with the truth. Yet it works as a standalone film because Madhavan and Ananya Pandey have given first rate performances. Akshay Kumar does not disappoint and comes across convincingly as Sir C. Shankaran Nair. Amit Sial has done his usual cynical, villainous turn but contributes to the overall mood. Regina Cassandra has the grace to elevate any kind of proceedings. So the film works as a courtroom drama keeping aside the historical side of things. But one must ask as to what was the need to make a film which takes so many liberties with truth?

The film takes liberties with Sir Nair's timelines. Shockingly, no such Jallianwala Bagh Trial was held. Kirpal Singh, the so-called poet who inspired Khudiram (Singh!) and Barinder (Kumar?), as well as his son, are fictional characters. Then again, Hunter Commission did relieve General Dyre after their findings, and importantly, Nair was not even a member of the Commission. Harold Laski did in fact act as a member of the jury, but he is referred in the film as 'Laksi'. Shankaran Nair was in fact a defendant in a libel case brought against him by Michael O' Dwoyer. That is the long and short of it, but somehow the makers of this film have jumbled up the facts. Anyway, it is a decent watch, but pray, do not learn history from this film.
