Anora - Misadventures of a Russian brat with an American sex worker

 ANORA 2024

by

Sean Baker

Son of a Russian oligarch studying in America wants one wild swing before he goes back to begin work. He picks a Brooklyn stripper, befriends her, then keeps her on retainer, before going completely bonkers and marrying her in Vegas. As expected, the family sends inept goons to get the marriage annuled, and then come papa and mama to see to it that it is taken care of.

The film has a lot of sex involved, but it is not very sensual. Acting is rather good by the ensemble cast, and especially by Mikey Madison. Big Russian Money's arrogance is well-contrasted with American working-class earnestness.

Is Anora a watchable flick? YEs, why not.

Is it worthy of being the Best Picture? No shit.

Is Mikey Madison's performance Best Actress class? Well, that is a loaded one. Out of five nominations, I am yet to watch Fernanda Torres in I'm Still Here. But Demi Moore in The Substance is very strong contender this year. Carla Sofia Garon in Emilia Perez and Cynthia Arivo in Wicked are not very strong in my estimation. Which means MM is in the mix, and one would not be too shocked if she lands the trophy.

The Best Director one for Sean Baker does not enthuse me. But then neither does Jacques Audiard for Emilia Perez. Or frankly speaking, Coralie Fargeat either. Let us see them all now and then predict.

Yura Borisov as a silent Russian hood who gradually picks up tongue and inspires confidence with his antics might just be a dark horse and win Best Supporting actor. He has that quality about him.
