Varun Tej is a goodlooking, hardworking actor. But he doesn't have the charisma yet to set the screen on fire. Matka is apparently based on the life of Ratan Khetri, the famous Matka King. The events depicted in the film occured in Vishakhapatnam between 1958 and 1982. A boy, born in poverty, is forced into a life of crime, and once corrupted, he aims to be the best in business. Matka is a decent film, just not a great one. Tej plays his part but he is neither Tony Montana nor Velu Nayagan. Meenakshi Chowdhary as his wife is quite irritating. Nora Fatehi does not much to do in her Telugu debut. Matka is a film that can be given a pass.
