PUZHU 2022

Puzhu means a worm. The worm is in Mammootty's head. He plays an ex-IPS who is troubled by paranoia and feelings of caste orthodoxy. His wife is dead, and he is a single parent. As a father, he is rather strict. He remains on the edge, always suspecting that someone was out to get rid of him. His estranged sister, Parvati, who had married a so-called lower caste man against the wishes of his family, comes to live in the same building in which he and his son reside. He is embittered by this development, and is further miffed when told that his sister was pregnant.
Mammootty has given a tremendous performance as a paranoid man. But it is the director who enures that there is constant tension throughout. One never knows what to expect, but there is always an uneasy feeling that haunts the viewer. That an established actor can take such risk after forty years of working is a testament to Mammootty's greatness. The film takes a stand against so-called Brahminical supremacy. To an extent it is unfair to Brahmins as the same person is shown exhibiting hatred against lower castes and a Muslim suspect. This is rather too unfair and unrequited, but then who is one to question the directorial vision?
