JOJI (Malayalam) - Best Macbeth Adaptation I Have Seen

 JOJI (2021)

DILEESH POTHAN

A domineering father, much too fit for his age. A control freak.

The eldest son- a divorcee, has major drinking problem, has a son.

The middle son- married with a thoughtful wife, subdued personality.

The youngest son- rears horses, engineering grad, drifter. Father considers him a loser. He accepts he is one. Fahadh Faasil plays this role.

When the Father gets bedridden, the family wishes him dead, but cannot say so openly. Someone acts on the instinct, and causes his death. The elder son gets too perturbed with rumours and accusations. Tragedy strikes not just once, but twice. Or rather, thrice.

The plantations of Kottayam are a beautiful setting for this plot. That Fahadh is a genius need not be reiterated. Baburaj (eldest son), Sunny P (Father) and Unnimaya Prasad (sister-in-law) are damn good, as is the boy. Cinematography is excellent. Many scenes in the film are outstandingly shot.

Dileesh Pothan has served a delight with JOJO. I have not yet seen Mahishinte Prathikaaram, but am a big fan of Thondimuthulum Driksakshiyum. JOJO is his third triumph. Three on three is perfect score. Hats off !
