The Yellow Wallpaper (1892) - A Short Story on Feminine Mental Health

 The Yellow Wallpaper

by

Charlotte Perkins Gilman

This is one of the earliest feminist works which deals with female mental health. A sick woman is a veritable prisoner of her physician husband in a retreat. She is forbidden to exert herself in any way, esp.not by writing. As a result she starts imagining things a lot more. She observes the room's wallpaper which is yellowing at places, notices its patterns and begins to imagine that some woman is trapped behind it. This is that kind of a short story, very influential, but now a bit dated.
