SWAYAMVARAM (Malayalam) - Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Debut Film

Swayamvaram (1972)
by
Adoor Gopalakrishnan

This is the debut film of the Malayalam Auteur , Adoor Gopalakrishnan.
Swayamvaram went on to win the Best Feature Film and Best Director National Awards. Sharada won the Best Actress and M.Ravi Varma won the National Award for Best Cinematography. The film is credited with beginning the New Age in Malayalam cinema. There are no songs, nor dances. The film is told with consummate ease without any eagerness to impress or rush.
A couple elopes without the consent of their parents and get married. The groom finds it difficult to get his novel published or land up with any job. The are forced to shift to less honourable locality. Life goes on.....until it gets a rude jolt.
The sound mixing in the film is quite unique. Sounds of rain, saw mill, winds and crying are used as leitmotifs. This lends authenticity to the whole show. Swayamvaram is a very smooth watch, and Ritwik Ghatak's and Satyajit Ray's influence is quite visible throughout.
