Hathyar(1989)- Wasteage of Resources

Hathyar 1989

JP Dutta

Too many stars, too many plots and subplots!
Hathyar has a problem of plenty. The director does not seem to be able to focus on any one track.
There is a Thakur Saheb (KB Kharbanda) who migrates with his wife and son to Mumbai in search of peace. In the city, he struggles to make his ends meet, but manages to befriend Rishi Kapoor, who is the brother of Dharmendra, who is a local don. Quite like the Thakur, Rishi is also a pacifist, and this has estranged him from his brother.

Sanjay Dutt is warm-blooded and can't seem to keep out of trouble. He kills with abandon and moves from one crisis to another. He oscillates between Dharmendra and Paresh Rawal, who are rival dons. If these are not enough, Asha Pareek, Amrita Singh and Sangeeta Bijlani are also cast in the film. Their stories get entangled into all this.

170 minutes runtime is a luxury. This film could have been wrapped off in 100 minutes. But that was not the way you did it in 1989.

No one has acted poorly. In fact, the film does not disappoint while it runs. It is just that it runs on needlessly. With lesser subplots, and tighter story, Hathyar could have been a damned good film.
