Gie 2005

This Indonesia film is a fictionalised biography of Soe Hok
Gie, a University of Indonesia graduate , an activist and a lover . Gie was a student and a thinker of
history, held humanitarian and anti-dictatorial views. Gie read a lot but was a reluctant participant in
politics.
The film is a fair and sensitive reflection of the 60s in
Indonesia when Sukarno and the conflict between the Army and PKI (Indonesia
Communist Party) dominated the era.
The film was Indonesian entry into Oscars for the Best
foreign film. The film is well made but runs very slowly and feels more like a
documentary than a drama.
