Margot At the Wedding- Nicole Kidman and Baumbach is a Combustible Mix

Margot at the Wedding 2007
by
Noah Baumbach

Noah Baumbach specializes in making films about dysfunctional families and unhappy relationships. Here he directs his focus on Nicole Kidman who arrives with her son to the Long Island home of her sister (Jeniffer Jason Leigh) who is getting married.

Nicole is a successful author, if a bit self-absorbed, and speaks her mind to her son, her sister and whoever else who happens to be in line of fire. There are longstanding issues between the sisters. JJL harbours grouse against NK because she thinks the latter parasitically uses their family’s stories and characters as fodder for her work. Nicole resents JJL for making wrong choices in life, in this instance she is unhappy with the choice of her would be husband (Jack Blake). NK considers JB a loser, a failed musician, which he is and comes across more as a retard than normal person. JJL also considers NK as someone who flips her decisions quite often. NK’s relationship with her husband (John Turturro in a cameo) is on the verge of breaking down, and she also has a fling with his screenwriter who she is collaborating with.

These are real characters and the issues facing them are mundane, but they bite. NK has bared open her soul to keep the film together. On some level, the film is also about the relationship between NK and her son. It seems she suffers from borderline personality disorder and resents her parental responsibilities as well. JJL has done well as her sister, and JB fits the role of a loser perfectly. This is a good film about relationships, if you r into those kinds of films. Goes without saying that Noah Baumbach is a mind-blowing director.
