I would not daresay that Dinkar needs no introduction.Infact
he can do with all that can be said about him.
In an age of internet and instant gratification ,amidst the
people who are ashamed and ignorant of
their own language and culture,Dinkar-Nirala-Prasad-Maithili-Mahadevi-Subhadra-Bachchan
,all of them need to be reintroduced and
repackaged for posterity.
Hindi is specially cursed.No one feels proud of this tongue
anymore ,although we seen billions paying
lip service to its cause.I have not seen such inferiority complex and contempt amongst
Tamilians,Kannadigas,Bengalis or Marathis for their own tongues.But the Hindi
heartland is left with no soul of its own.We are baser people that way,lets not
hold back in admitting this.In this bleak scenario,I must salute Kumar Vishwas
for presenting the Mahakavi series on great Hindi poets.I wud have sent him to
Rajya Sabha only for this effort,but obviously Kejariwal love for lucre overrides his appreciation for words.
Ramdhari ji foresaw his own death,and travelled to
Rameshwaram where he recited his Rashmirathi in the temple,and then as dakshina
begged the Ocean to relieve him of his life.Whatever is left of it,if any,grant
it to JP,he wished.He passed away the same night on april 24,1974 ,so goes the
legend.JP adopted “simghason khali karo”as his war cry.
He started off as a sympathiser of revolutionaries,later
became a Gandhian ,and after independence,a Congress Rajya Sabha MP from
1952-64.It did not stop him from
questioning ,and even lambasting the feudal mindset and corruption of his party
colleagues.
“Simhasan Khali karo ki janta ati hai” and “jo tatastha hain
samay likega unka bhi aparadh”were blatantly anti-establishment lines which transformed the Rashtrakavi into a
Janakavi .Post –China war ,he became a staunch critic of Nehru and compared him
with Yudhisthir.Another legend goes that Jawaharlal Nehru once fumbled while climbing a
podium ,but Dinkar saved him from falling down
and said “ whenever politics has slipped,literature has
lent a helping hand.” It is to Nehru’s credit that he didn’t expel or downgrade
Dinkar ,despite such kind of opposition.
The epiode has drawn a beautiful portrait of Dinkar,the poet
and the man.I hope every Hindi-speaking youngster watches this series.If the
language is to survive,its poems must be read ,and songs heard.Thank you,KV for
