One must concede that The Fan was a very average film. The featured baseball was unengaging, and that was disappointing considering that it was a sports film! Wesley Snipes as the main baseball player seemed very distant. His passion seemed paper-thin; his struggles superficial. Benecia del Toro as a show-pony also seemed quite fake. But right from the opening poem recital, Robert De Niro, playing the eponymous fan, seemed quite locked in. Scene by scene, Bob developed his snarkiness and craziness to an extent that his very presence on screen gave toxic vibes. De Niro managed to take a fan's obsession to disgusting levels. This is a meaner and more hateworthy role than what he did in Cape Fear. With 15 minutes of editing, and a little support from Snipes, The Fan could have worked like magic.
