Robert De Niro plays a parole officer who is weeks from his retirement. Edward Norton is a convicted arsonist looking to get paroled anyhow after many failed attempts. Together, Ed and Milla Jovovich, his wife, set about working Bob's mind. Bobby finally relents after Milla submits herself physically. Ed's game is revealed before his release, but the parole officer is unable to halt his release, once his report is submitted. Bob's long-suffering wife leaves him, his home is burnt down by the released arsonist, and retirement leaves him emotionally unstable. This is a film which must be watched for De Niro's impotent lament in the last 15 minutes. Ed could have done with lesser baritone (sometimes incomprehensible) and more intensity.
