Iqra means 'read'. Read for yourself and get to know. The Holy Quran urges one to read. Iqra is the very first word revealed in the Book. Despite this unequivocal stand taken by Alah-e-Pak in the revealed text itself, qazis and other interpreters have held adherents in their clutches. Haq obviously draws inspiration from the famous Shah Bano Case and the subsequent constitutional amendment effected by the Rajiv Gandhi government, yet Yami Gautam's character of Shazia Bano also seeks inspiration from numerous other Muslim women who have borne the brunt of triple-talaq and dereliction.
Yami has played her role with grace, and with immense force. A very pregnant actor exudes a divine halo while fighting her unreasonable husband. Emraan Hashmi is in top form. He is fitter than ever and has owned the part. What a perfect casting! Together, these two are enough to 'make the film work', so to speak. Danish Aslam, SM Zaheer and Sheeba Chaddha have also done well.
Emraan's character chooses to marry a second time. His first wife, played by Yami, sees this as betrayal, but under societal pressure, tries to adjust. When it does not work, she takes her kids and goes to her father's house. After paying Rs 400 as maintenance for the first few months, Emraan stops. When she threatens to go to court against it, he calls her home and says talaq thrice. His argument is that since he has now divorced her through talaq-e-biddat, he is entitled to pay maintenance only for the iddat period (generally 3 months), and no more. Bano's case is basically Shariat vs applicability of CrPC Section 125. Needless to say, AIMPLB and the husband try to make the matter about Islam and the guarantees given to its followers. The film very sensitively and beautifully incorporates those in the film.
Haq is a well-directed film as well. It was very easy to get berserk and spray communal nonsense, but the actors, writer Reshu Nath and the director deserve all the plaudits coming their way.
