FISH TANK 2009
by
Andrea Arnold
A 15-year-old girl living with her abusive mother and precocious sister hip-hops her way through days. She has sparred with her best friend and is caught while freeing an old horse. Her mother's lover, played by Michael Fassbender, manages to find an opening with her. For a very brief period, the four of them are even happy. Then he abuses her sexually and breaks up with her mother the next morning. She follows him to where he lives and discovers his secrets. A line is crossed which results in essential learning. At the end of the film, she leaves the tank and heads to Wales. The bildungsroman is beautifully directed and tightly written. This BAFTA-decorated film has assumed a cult status over the years.
