ATONEMENT- A Writer's Curse

 ATONEMENT 2007

by

Joe Wright

When she was quite a child, a future author witnessed a crime and gave false evidence against a young man she herself crushed upon but who was in a relationship with her elder sister. Many lives are ruined by this act of jealousy. Many years later, seeking closure, she pens down her last novel in which lends the story of her sister and her paramour a happy ending. Even as the author stares at death and want to do good by her sister, her 'god complex' makes her believe that she had the power to undo wrong and manufacture rights. The magic of Ian McEwan's prose does not quite shine through in the screenplay, but the film is shot very aesthetically. James McAvoy did a fine job. Keira Knightly looks absolutely ravishing, especially in that green dress of hers. Saoirse Ronan was nominated by the Academy as the Best Supporting Actor. The film was nominated in seven categories, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, but won an Oscar only for the Original Score.
