John Grisham's legal thrillers are so exciting to go through. Most films based on his novels fail to do justice to the written material. But A Time to Kill has such heavy ensemble cast that it is a treat to sit through the 150 minutes' runtime. Matthew McConaughey is in top form as a do-gooder white lawyer in Mississippi and a family man. Ashley Judd plays his wife without much to do. Sandra Bullock helps him in the case, Donald Sutherland is his drunk, suspended mentor. Mat is on a mission to save Samuel Jackson who has gunned own two men who had raped his daughter. Kevin Spacey plays the state counsel asking for death penalty, Kiefer Sutherland is a local white hoodlum who revives the local Klan and leads violent reprisals. Chris Cooper also has a good cameo. The film explores race as a lived experience. Samuel Jackson's character says that he chose Matthew as his lawyer because as a white man, the latter could think like the jury would.
A Time to Kill is a tad long, but well-made film. Sandra Bullock and Samuel J are in their elements.
