SAARE JAHAN SE ACHCHA: The Silent Guardians 2025
#netflix
This web series is not based upon a true story but upon loosely based upon true events. I realized this early on with dramatization of Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha's assassination. RAW had some inkling that the great man's life was in danger, but they had no specific information. They certainly did not fail to save him by a margin of fifteen minutes. That is pure hogwash.
Despite this setback, I plodded because I like spies and India-Pakistan stuff. I also like Pratik Gandhi who comes across as a perfectly constipated RAW officer in the series. There is no joie-de-vivre about him. He lives and breathes his work and carries out his role perfectly. His marital tension with Tilottama Shome is just so typically Indian, it smells of curry. By the way, Shome looks too old to be a newly wedded wife now. I concede she is a decent actor, but so what? She has to look the part at least.
One can safely declare that Pratik has been overshadowed by Sunny Hinduja in this web series. As the Urdu-speaking, mustachioed, bespectacled ISI chief, Sunny exudes venom and confidence. When he arrives on the screen, the series comes alive. His scenes with Anup Soni, playing a compromised officer of the Pakistan Army, are exceptional. Sunny Hinduja has always managed to impress- be it in Aspirants or in The Railway Men. Suhail Nayyar has also done well in his role as an embedded Indian spy. To a large extent, he steals the show on the Indian side. Anup Soni, Ninad Kamat and Kritika Kamra have done their bit. Rajat Kapoor plays Rameshwar Nath Kao with the conviction of a born spymaster. Don't I just love Rajat!
The series is watchable but would have been happier had it been based upon true events. Cooked up events have a way of going overboard. It is decently well-made six-episode series which could have been stretched by one more. Sunny Hinduja could have been made to suffer the setback. Gandhi could have been allowed to celebrate.
