CHEHRE - Too many Blackcoats locked in a Villa

 CHEHRE 2021

Emraan Hashmi gets stranded in a snowfall-cum-landslide. He takes refuge in a winter villa hosting a retired judge, a defense counsel, a prosecution counsel, a hangman, a governess and some muscle. Whereas Bheja Fry or The Dinner Guest was more free-flowing, this film, based upon a German novel, A Dangerous Game, has a definite form. The retired gentlemen ask the guest to play a game in which they hold him in dock for some purported crime.

You cannot fault Rumi Jaffrey for being non-serious. The film, especially its dialogues, maintains its form throughout. Amitabh Bachchan sermonizes a lot as the prosecution lawyer. Dhritiman Chatterjee is graceful as ever. Annu Kapoor overdoes shamelessly as the defense lawyer. Rahuvir Yadav just has to look crazy. Rhea Chakraborty is noticeable. Hashmi plays a typical wannabe upstart with aplomb. This is enough to make the film work. But it does not ever transcend its promise because one simply cannot suspend his disbelief and accept the proceedings as credible. That is the undoing of Chehre.
