A REAL PAIN - Kieran Culkin for Best Supporting Actor?

A REAL PAIN 2024

by

Jesse Eisenberg

Two Jewish cousins who live in and around NY take a heritage trip to Poland to honour their recently deceased grandmother. The guys were once close but have since drifted apart. One has a job and family, the other is a drifter. The drifter is casual, laidback, overtly sensitive, naturally funny and generally charismatic, but has a penchant for creating dramatic situations. Jesse is a fire-fighter, he has a need to control socially awkward situations.

As they go around with other group members in merry Poland, they realize that despite all the differences, they still loved each other. Nothing much happens in the film, but it is consistently watchable for the simple reason that there is balance in the script. Small bits keep happening, and keep you engaged, even as they reveal the characters of the two guys. Jesse has worked in two Woody Allen films. That influence is visible in this A REAL PAIN.

Very smart piece of screenwriting by Jesse who deserves an Oscar for Original Screenplay. Culkin is winning BSA on the circuit and might land an Oscar too. Again, respect towards the Jews for keeping their heritage alive by making such discovery/rediscovery/remembrance/tribute kind of films. Hats off!
