MANAVAT MURDERS (2024)
by
Ashish Avinash Bende
Seven females are murdered in Manavat (Maharashtra) in early 70s in a period of 18 months. Bombay's senior cop, played by Ashutosh, is sent to Manavat to investigate where he runs into rural liquor mafia and caste loyalties and finds it tough to crack it.
The series takes up cudgels against superstition and black magic, and calls them out as major influences behind mindless crime. Alcohol enables malcontents to generate cash through which easy recruits can be found to commit crime.
The series is a slow burn, perhaps it drags on for too long. What gets unfolded in 8 episodes could have been wrapped up in six. Ashutosh could have been a tad less idealistic as a character. No other character is developed enough, and most end up being flat characters. Even Sai Tamhankar and Sonali Kulkarni have not been utilized properly. Being a murder mystery, Manavat Murders is watchable, but could have been far better with better editing and deeper edge.
