An old man wants to visit Banaras, and keeps running away from his home for that purpose. The family wont go with him, but wont let him take the trip either. Basil Joseph, his elder grandson, is a dubbing artist. He says yes to marrying a girl but the engagement is sabotaged due to ruckus caused by a rowdy. The younger grandson is a well-meaning loafer. Their father is a cynical work-shirker, almost a part of the domestic furniture. Mother is a hard-working soul who works at a printing press to keep the show running. This is a lower middle class household, with a lot of unresolved ego issues.
Basil decides to take a break from his life in the town by taking his grandfather to Banaras. The family is goaded to come along. An eventful journey ensues, which brings out the best and the worst in them all. A family needs to spend time with each other to sort out the wrinkles now and then. This can only happen by means of train or road journeys, flights being too impersonal. I consider such family expeditions as family therapy, which must be resorted to now and then.
As for the film, anything that takes me to Banaras is welcome. This one is a sincere effort.
