AIR FORCE ONE - What a Blockbuster!

 AIR FORCE ONE 1997

Wolfgang Petersen

"Let me help him. He's our President for god's sake", a US AF-1 security marshal entreaties a hijacker. The President, Harrison Ford, is hanging on a pole and is about to fly out of an open gate of Air Force One. The film is as ridiculous as a high-budget Hollywood blockbuster can be. But it works, somehow, and that is probably because it believes in its own highfalutin talk.

AF-1, the official ride of the POTUS is hijacked by Kazakh ultra-nationalists, who demand the release of their recently imprisoned leader who happens to be a warmonger. The White House is divided over command and policy direction, but Glenn Close, the USVP stands with the POTUS till the very end. The President has no doubts though. He refuses to escape through the 'escape-pod' because he can't leave behind his wife and daughter. The ultras are led by Gary Oldman, who comes across as a villain-with-vehemence. AF-1 is a damn good hijacking and rescue thriller, and the presence of Ford and Oldman elevates it to heights.
