First things first, Liam Neeson would not let his family succumb to a car bomb. As Oskar Schindler, the man had saved hundreds of Jews. In Taken films, he has rescued his daughter so many times. Liam can't fail, and we know that, and hence thrill can never turn into suspense.
Retribution is a film in which a busy, misunderstood father finds himself trapped with his kids in a car fitted with a huge bomb. The man is a venture fund manager and quite well off but seems to have lost connect with his family. The bomber maintains contact through a phone placed inside the car through which he barks directions. Through it all, the father retains wits, and manages to turn the tables on the bomber, who turns out to be his VF boss and friend.
Liam Neeson is a man-in-control. There is something about his personality and body language which suggests that he would always retain the charge and never relinquish control. Why has he never been considered as Bond is beyond my understanding, Retribution is watchable if you are a fan of Liam, because then the tension of the threat does not affect your well-being.
