Independence Day - Humans Vs Aliens

 Independence Day 1996

by

Roland Emmerich

Aliens come calling to earth with the intention to wipe away all life. They park their saucers directly above multiple global capitals and stay there without demanding anything. This is  sort of checkmate. Jeff Goldblum plays a wiseass scientist who cracks some codes, installs some programs and flies with Will Smith to corrupt their codes. Meanwhile the President struggles with his ratings, Will Smith in his career, Jeff with his love life and people with their lives.

The film is great spectacle, and draws you in. It is not sci-fi per se, rather is disaster porn of a kind. It works because it doesn't go all intellectual upon the audience and displays no pretensions. Will Smith is in his early days of stardom, and has Bad Boy airs. Jeff Goldblum is as reliable as ever. Watch it for fun and to relieve old times.
