Madhav Rao was a fine Peshwa. Within ten years of the Panipat decimation, he had managed to recover the prestige of the Maratha Empire. He was hamstrung by the machinations of Raghoba, but displayed fine qualities of a leader. He got infected with intestinal TB, and passed away in 1772, aged 27. His death came served a huge blow to the Marathas, from which they could never properly recover. Rama- Madhav is conceived off as a love story between the young Peshwa and his wife, Ramabai. She could not bear him any children, but he refused to take another wife. On his death, Rama chose to become Sati.

Mrinal Kulkarni has directed the film beautifully. War scenes are not of very high quality, but the human angle comes across beautifully. Alok Rajwade has done well as the young Madhav, Parna Pethe is quite sweet as Rama. Mrinal herself plays Gopika Bai, while Prasad Oak shines as Raghoba.
