Four social stories, full of exploitation and violence, from across the China are beautifully presented by Jia Zhangke. From party bosses to village communists, drifters to factory workers and prostitutes are covered. Does the film say a lot about the daily life and struggle in China? Based that it is upon real incidents, the film has a realistic aura about it, but does not reveal anything new or special about China.

The direction is unhurried. Tension is allowed to build gradually. Stories reach their own conclusions. The film is eminently watchable.
