The Devil's Advocate - Al Pacino as Mindfucking Satan

 The Devil's Advocate 1997

Taylor Hackford

Keanu Reeves could never decide if he should imitate Tom Cruise, Hugh Grant or Matthew Broderick. That is except when he acts in Matrix or John Wick. Charlize Theron is portrayed as a giggly, sugar-sweet wife of an upcoming lawyer, who himself quotes scriptures at will, and has a conscience to grapple with.

Al Pacino acts as Satan, but calls himself, believe it or not, John Milton. He lives in a huge single-room apartment. This room and his mannerisms remind me of Scarface. Tony Montana was too protective of his sister. JM is too close to his daughter. He speaks Mandarin, Korean, Italian and throws around dialogues like he did in Any Given Sunday. Al is too dramatic here, and although there are supernatural elements, they come across as rather hilarious.

Perhaps the film has not dated well. Its been 24 years since it was released. I had quite liked it when I first watched it in 2005. But now it brings out guffaws. Not even AL Pacino or a nude Theron could rescue it.
