SHAKTI - Dilip Kumar + Bachchan

Rakhee, Smita Patil, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Ambrish Puri play vital cameos in the film, but this film is about two men who play father and son- Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. Even Ashok Kumar has a small role.

The father is obsessed with his job and attendant principles. The son feels he comes secondary to the father's commitment to duty and love for self-image. Their paths digress, and never ultimately meet. The film worls because of some quality acting by the actors. But the writing is second grade. There is no warmth in father-son relationship. Even the hate is subdued, and underplayed. It is almost as if both Dilip and Amitabh were shy about expressing themselves.

Writing is extremely poor and predictable. Dialogues are pedestrian. Salim Javed have made a hash of this aspect. Sample this-

 "लानत है तुम पर ।

शर्म आनी चाहिए तुम्हें।

जाओ और डूब मारो चुल्लू भर पानी में ।

मैंने सारा इंतेजाम कर दिया था । तुम्हें सिर्फ गोली चलानी थी । और तुम वो भी ठीक से नहीं कर सके"।

Ambrish Puri, a dreaded smuggler, arranges for Kulbhushan, his rival, to be shot. His men fail, and consequently he rails. Just imagine, how feebly so.

Amitabh Bachchan performs with remarkable restraint, and steals Dilip Kumar's thunder in a scene when they come together after Rakhi's death. This must rank as one of Big B's most satisfying performances.
