WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN - This Does Not End Well

We Need to Talk about Kevin  2011

This is the story of a mother and a child, gone horribly wrong. A reluctant mother and a disturbed (or manipulative?) son fight battles for 16 long years. And then the son escalates it into a major war against humanity by killing his sister, father and a large number of students in his school.

The story runs in the flashback. One knows some tragedy has already occurred. The townspeople are hostile towards Tilda Swinton (mom). As she tries to come to terms with the tragedy, she remembers the ceaseless hatred her son had displayed towards her all through his childhood and adolescence. Maybe she is also fed up with his behaviour.

It’s a dark and disturbing film, but it does not explain why Kevin massacres so many people. It is well shot, acting is superb ,OST is good and the film flows through time. And yet,I guess, one needs to go back to Lionel Shriver’s novel to delve into the psychology of Kevin. In a way,I would dub this movie ‘striking’, but ‘frustrating’, one that’s good enough in some respects but is ultimately a failure.
