MANK - Acerbic Wit and Political Games in the Hollywood of 30s & 40s

 MANK 2020

by

DAVID FINCHER

A screenwriter agrees to write a film and promises to forgo credit. He bases the story on a big businessman, newspaperman and a politician, but more importantly, his own benefactor. Thus is born the script of  Citizen Kane. The one who is written is not happy to be turned into a film subject, and the presentation of his mistress as a show girl. Nevertheless, the writer persists, and completes the script.

At its completion, Herman Mankiewicz realizes that this is the best he had ever written and requests for credit. This enrages Orson Welles, but ultimately they settled for joint credit. Mank is the story of this script, which ultimately gets rewarded at Oscar's for the best Original Screenplay.

David Fincher takes us to the Hollywood of 1930s and 40s, where Orson, Louis B. Mayer, William Hearst, Irving Thalberg, Marion Davies and sundry others are in action. Mank is recuperating in California. The film is for those who have seen and love Citizen Kane.

Gary Oldman has done a terrific role as Mank, but is not gonna win the Oscar. Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies is also nominated for the BEst Supporting actress. Mank is nominated for ten Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Are they gonna win any of these four? I dont think so.
