LAL DARJA (Bengali) - Satisfaction Lies Within

 LAL DARJA

by

Buddhadeb Dasgupta

A dentist's wife walks out on him because she feels unloved and unwanted. Their son also does the encore. The dentist visits a shrink to discuss the problem of his stiffness, and is told that there was nothing wrong with him.

The dentist is in awe of his driver who has two wives and a lover, and all three of them seem satisfied with him. He knows how to love and to be loved in turn. This inspires the dentist to accept the situation, and embrace his lonesomeness. The motif of Lal Darja (Red Darja) which opens on singing a song in his childhood runs throughout the film.

Lal Darja won the National Award for the Best Film in 1996. It is one of Buddhadeb's five films to have won this prestigious Award.
