AK Vs AK 2020

That AK Vs AK is a meta-cinematic project needs no further mention, but why is this being labelled as ‘experimental’ is anyone’s guess. What are the makers experimenting with in this genre?

The plot is predictable from the word go. One is always aware where the story is headed since Anil Kapoor is obviously running the show with his whole family getting involved. That said, Anil Kapoor has done some mind-blowing work in this film. There is raw energy in his expressions, a kind of vehemence which infuses immediacy in a thin plot.

Anurag Kashyap, on the other hand, plays the fool and has tried to sleepwalk through the film. He tries to act like a creep, but has miserably failed. All the blows he has taken, and the points he lets Anil score are just exercises in vanity. Maybe he wants to exult in his own greatness and that is fine, but then why bother with narratives like his films are flops and no one recognizes him, or identify him wrongly as Abhinav Kashyap or Anurag Basu.

You daughter has been kidnapped, and you are a star. The director expects me to believe that the star is not able to convince the cops that something was wrong. He runs around the metropolis showing a mobile picture to strangers for identification and address. All these bits never add up. Anurag never makes much sense. Harshavardhan irritates like only he can. Sonam is almost silent, so she is tolerable. Yogita, who plays Kashyap’s assistant, manages to capture eyeballs.

I wish Anil Kapoor had given dates for Allwyn Kalicharan in 2007. Then there would have been no need for this contrived effort which masquerades as some kind of uber-cool spontaneous experiment in film-making.

PS- I honestly did not expect Kashyap to play a giggling idiot to Anil Kapoor’s Lakhan, or Advocate Arun Verma of Meri Jang. The old man is on fire, the director is quite disappointing.
