Meghe Dhaka Tara - Ghatak's Classic

 Meghe Dhaka Tara 1960

by

Ritwik Ghatak

Khuki is the breadwinner of the family which has been displaced because of the Partition. Her father , an English teacher, is now irrelevant. Mother is manipulative, and complaining. A brother is a wannabe singer and another a sportsperson- both are taken care of by Khuki. Her sister is a mynah who has nothing going for her except her looks.

Khuki sacrifices everything for her family yet they her mother and sister know no satisfaction. Father has no voice. Brothers try to help by speaking kind words whenever they can. She likes a boy but does not marry him because of his responsibilities. He ends up marrying her sister.

Ghatak's tale has an important message. Appeasement crushes the soul of the one who is appeasing, and gives infinite appetite to the one who is being appeased. It is a disease, which must be banished. A great film, especially in the use of sound and light. Ghatak was a genius!
