by

Marielle Heller

Melissa McCarthy plays Lee Israel, a lonesome, rude, alcoholic biographer who is appreciated but does not much sell. She is hard-pressed to pay her bills and even take care of her cat.

She stumbles upon a way to earn money, that is by faking and selling correspondence between famous authors like Dorothy Parker, Noel Coward and many others. This gets her by for some time, but the racket was bound to get busted, and it does.

When caught, Melissa is not repentant and maintains that the work did provide her with creative satisfaction, for faking such correspondence was no mean feat. In the meantime, she manages befriend a dandy, Richard Grant, and also loses her cat.

Later Lee ISrael puts all this together in her autobiography in 2007, which sold quite well. The film is based on that book. Melissa McCarthy was nominated for best Actor, and Richard Grant for the Best SA by the Academy.

Watch this film if you have any inclination to write. Appreciate the outburst of creativity.
