MRITYUNJAY - IT Flows Like Ganges, Till it Abruptly Stops

Chandraprakash Dwivedi

Dr Dwivedi is a trusted name.He serves authentic historical stories , and places premium on dialogues and costumes. He is not after drama, rather seeks genuineness. That such a man chose to make a series on Shivaji Sawant's labour of love , Mrityunjay, was an exhilarating piece of news.

Shivaji Sawant's Marathi novel tells Mahabharat from Karna's viewpoint. Life always handed a raw deal to Karna and robbed him of opportunities and justice. The main theme of his life was 'search for identity' and who better than Dr Dwivedi to bring the story to life.

Raj Zutushi played Karna, Rajendra Gupta became his father Atirath, Narendra Jha was Arjun and Shrivallabh Vyas was Duryodhana.Virendra Saxena  was cast as Vidur,Surendra Pal as Bhishma and Nina Gupta played Kunti. Despite the dream cast, and all round praise, the serial was abruptly shelved after merely 13 episodes.

This project has such potential, and yet its promise could not be fulfilled. I wonder what ailed Dr Dwivedi on this one.
