HASMUKH - Pahwa Wasted, Vir Das Underwhelming

HASMUKH 2020

For a webseries centred around the lives of three stand-up comedians, and written by Vir Das himself, Hasmukh churns out rather staid jokes. Vir Das packs a lot of punch in his stand-ups, but is found wanting in this series. Is he burdened by the requirements of acting ? Playing oneself, or a similar role onscreen restrains one from assuming true colours.

Ranveer Shorey starts strongly as his manager, Jimmy the Maker, but fizzles out as other characters arrive onto the scene. Ravi Kishan plays a lecher , but overdoes his tomfoolery, as is his wont.Amrita Baghchi is sweet but hardly has any screen presence. Suhail Nayyar as KK is also not worth the screentime he gets, Raza Murad is hardly there to count.

But it is Manoj Pahwa who has a larger than life presence yet has been criminally underused in the series. It is his punches in the beginning that set the mood, which unfortunately Vir and Shorey are unable to sustain. I don’t think any other actor mouths abuses as naturally and with such force as Pahwa does.

Hasmukh drags on for 10 episodes, and collapses under its own illogical premise. Killing someone before every act to sustain your mojo is a rather costly price to pay for any wannabe. Even the audience cant swallow bats and dinosaurs to indulge their favourite actors.
