Thomas Cromwell was the son of a blacksmith but rose on to be the chief minister of Henry VIII between 1532-40. Henry was the second Tudor king who married six times. This is the story of Cromwell, Henry VIII, his wives Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, Sir Thomas More and Cardinal Wolsey. This is also the story of how Catholics and Protestants were at loggerheads, how Henry fared against France and Holy Roman Empire and repudiated Pope’s authority to establish church of England. Catherine , the first wife, could not bear him a son which Henry so desperately wanted. It was his desire to get his marriage annulled and marry Anne Boleyn that led to the break-up.Thomas Cromwell made a swift leap from Cardinal Wolsey’s helper to become the most powerful man in merry England.
Hilary Mantel has written two beautiful novels on this era , Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies , each of which has fetched her a Booker . The series is quite well-made and is suitably dark as the subject matter demands. Mark Rylance as Cromwell , Damien Lewis as Henry VIII and Clair Foy as Anne are simply marvellous.
This series is a mustwatch because it transports you to early 16th century.
